With the onset of winter also comes the coughs and sniffles. Yoga teachers are not immune to coughs and colds. As soon as the cold weather sets in I start making my favourite winter drink: ginger, lemon and honey.
It is also one of the things I love about Bali (did you hear I am leading a retreat in Bali in 2018?), they do a great ginger, lemon and honey hot drink, and even though the weather is hot and humid, I still can't get enough of it. I have spent many years trying to perfect my own recipe and am happy to say I have come up with something delicious and nourishing for the winter.
There is a quick way (not quite as delicious) and a slow way (the best option if you have time).
The Quick Way
1 slice of lemon
Juice of 1/2 to 1 lemon, approximately 20 ml
5-6 slices of ginger
1 big teaspoon of honey
Place all ingredients into a big mug and pour over boiling water. Allow to sit for for a few minutes, enjoy.
The Slow Way (but more delicious)
50 - 60 grams of ginger, sliced (Approximately)
3 litres of water
1 slice of lemon
Juice of 1/2 to 1 lemon, approximately 20 ml
1 big teaspoon of honey
1-2 slices of ginger extra
Place ginger and water into a large saucepan and bring to boil, simmer for 10 minutes then turn off and allow to steep. I like to leave mine over night. Decant into a bottle with the ginger and store in the fridge.
To make a cup, heat up a cup of the ginger liquid (with a few slices) in a saucepan, place the lemon juice, lemon slice and honey into a mug (I like to use my fressko flask), and add the hot ginger. This method is the most delicious.
I drink 1 -2 glasses of this each day. It is super delicious. The key is in the honey.
Enjoy.
With Love.
